Obituary For Meriam Spriggs

Please keep Servant Larry Sampson and Family lifted in your prayers in the passing of his cousin, Mrs. Meriam Spriggs.

Mrs. Spriggs was 91 years old and lived next door to him since he was 12 years old. Final arrangements are pending at this time.

Mrs. Spriggs was born on May 27, 1932 in Rock Hall, MD, daughter of the late Thomas Murrill Groce, Sr. and Ardena Jones Groce. After graduating from high school, she furthered her education at Bowie State College, earning her education degree in 1953. Later that year she began teaching in Cecil County and in 1964 moved to Chestertown Middle School teaching 8th grade Social Studies and English. She retired in 1992. Mrs. Spriggs joined Aaron Chapel at a young age and transferred to Asbury UM Church where she was active, serving on the finance committee, co-chair of their Annual Day and supported numerous functions. She was a member of the NAACP, Maryland State Teacher’s Assoc, and the Kent County Teacher’s Assoc. Meriam loved to read, shop, dine and travel.

Along with her parents, she was preceded by her 1st husband of 19 years, Richard O. Wilson in 1978; her 2nd husband of 17 years, James R. Spriggs in 1998; twin daughters, Richelle and Michelle Wilson; stepson James Spriggs; grandson Arlo Wilson and a brother Robert B. Groce.

Mrs. Spriggs is survived by her daughters, Lorna Wilson Allen (Terrell) of Bowie, MD and Denise Wilson Browning (Anthony) of Tampa, FL; stepdaughters, Carolyn Brooks and Michele Johnson both of Glenside, PA; a brother Thomas M. Groce (Joan) of Quaker Neck; 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

A viewing will be held on Friday, November 10 from 9:30 -11am at the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD where funeral service will begin at 11 am. Burial will follow in Asbury U.M. Cemetery, Chestertown.
