Obituary For Gaynell Thomas Johnson

Greetings Metropolitan Family,

Please be in prayer for Ms. Regina Valentine and Mr. Walter Johnson and Family, in the sudden passing of their beloved, Mrs. Gaynell Thomas Johnson. She is the mother of Ms. Regina Valentine and the wife of Mr. Walter Johnson.

Gaynell “Gaynie” Thomas Johnson, 81, a native of Baton Rouge, LA, and a resident of Oakland, CA, departed this life on Nov. 14, 2022. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Allen Temple Baptist Church, Oakland, CA. She was a 1958 graduate of Southern University Laboratory School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from Southern University and two Master’s Degrees; one from the University of Kentucky and one from Southern University. Gaynell’s two primary places of employment were Southern University where she was employed as a Librarian/Media Specialist, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Ca., where she was employed as a Technical Information Specialist, and later as a Film/Television Media Producer.

She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for 53 years and was a member of the Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter. Gaynell will be missed by her husband Walter L. Johnson, Sr.; her daughter Regina A. Valentine; stepsons, Walter Johnson, Jr.; Erik Johnson (Crystal); brother Michael C. Simmons; Cousin Charles Stewart, numerous nieces, and nephews; cousins and other relatives. Gaynell was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar L. Thomas and Melba S. Simmons; her son, Brandon (Byron) Valentine; her sister, Y. Jean Whitley.
